      About this Washington DC tour

Washington is the ultimate power town, a city of movers and shakers. And you'll fit right in, moving along at a brisk pace as you explore on a cool 24-speed bike. A whole lot of history is packed into the District, and there's a lot to see.

The National Mall is the center of the action. In fact, the city's most visited landmarks are found within it or around it. The Mall stretches from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol, with the Washington Monument standing tall at the heart of it and the World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial nearby. Pierre L'Enfant, the man with the original plan for the city, called D.C. "a pedestal waiting for a monument." He had no idea.

The Mall is also the central gathering place for Americans, to celebrate (presidential inaugurations, for instance) and to protest (it's where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his "I have a dream" speech). You'll be hard pressed not to feel the presence of the millions who've gathered here in the past to witness history, and to make it.

After the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, he handed the typewritten pages to George Raveling, an all-American basketball player from Villanova University. Raveling, a volunteer security guard at the event, still has that original copy and, despite being offered millions of dollars, says he'll never sell it.
