      About this Washington, DC tour

As our nation's capital, Washington, D.C., is home to the White House, the official residence and workplace of every one of our presidents since 1800. An elegant and entertaining way to get a taste of D.C's presidential history is to take the Odyssey III brunch cruise.

When you pass by the Lincoln Memorial, note its 36 columns, one for each state reunited following the Civil War. No truth to the rumor, though, that Abraham Lincoln's hands in the sculpture spell out "A" and "L" in sign language. The Jefferson Memorial shares a similar Parthenon-inspired design – one that was approved by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It originally had a plaster cast of the Thomas Jefferson statue, due to wartime restrictions on metal, but was replaced with a more fitting bronze statue after the war.

The Kennedy Center (quite a cultural treasure), the always-busy Reagan National Airport, and the forest that is Theodore Roosevelt Island are other presidential-themed sights you'll see from your cruise, as is the stirring Arlington National Cemetery, where presidents John F. Kennedy and William Howard Taft, along with 400,000+ service members and others, are buried.

But not every attraction you'll see is a positive reflection on the presidency. Like the Watergate. This office complex was the scene of the President Nixon-authorized break-in of the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee in 1972. All of the attractions, though, contribute to who we are as Americans. A brunch cruise with a hearty entree of American lore? That's pretty delicious.

      Moon over the Potomac

The Potomac River offers a grand view of the Washington Monument and the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials. Back in the day, it offered a different kind of view for Anne Royall, one of the first female political journalists. It turns out that the river was where President John Quincy Adams liked to swim. In the nude. Clever Anne came across the commander-in-chief during one of his swims and reportedly sat on his clothes until he agreed to answer her questions, with only his head emerging from the water.
