      About this Washington, DC tour

Gospel music is a (mostly) American music tradition, and one that this country is famous for – so it's fitting to hear it in our nation's capital. Its roots date back to the 1600s, when Africans brought here as slaves also brought their musical traditions of repetition and call and response.

Gospel music's highly emotional charge finds its way into a variety of genres, including country, blues, bluegrass, southern-rock, and rock. It was a strong influence in the development of soul music and is equally powerful when performed by soloists or choirs. The gospels in the Bible tell the story of Jesus' birth, death, and resurrection, and gospel music captures the essence of this powerful story of faith and redemption.

As you dine, and the Spirit of Washington sails down the Potomac, listen to a narrated tour explain what you're seeing through the boat's panoramic windows, including attractions like the Lincoln Monument and the U.S. Capitol.

After lunch, listen to a local gospel choir or solo singer put the spirit in the Spirit of Washington. Sit down and be inspired. Or get up and dance to the music. If you'd like, purchase a keepsake photo of you and your loved ones from your day. Praise be!

      Make art, not war

The Torpedo Factory Art Center, one of the attractions you'll see from the water, is home to over 165 working artists, but its original use was a far cry from an art museum. On the very day that marked the end of World War I, construction began on the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station and it was in use until the end of WWII. Before the city of Alexandria purchased the property in 1969 and set about converting it into artist studios; the government used the place as a storage vault for everything from German war films to Smithsonian art objects to dinosaur bones.
