6-Person National Gallery of Art -Tour with an Art Historian
Washington DC, USA
- Stunning architecture: Admire the Neoclassical facade of the West Building, its dome and stately columns a reflection of the museum's original benefactors' admiration of ancient Greek and Roman culture.
- Art masterpieces: Marvel at paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and sculptures that trace the development of Western Art from the Middle Ages to the present, including works by Van Eyck, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Da Vinci, John J. Audubon, and many others.
- More than a guide: Even by GoBe standards, your tour leader is special. Known officially as "docents" (from the Latin for teacher), these Ph.D. and M.A.-level art experts promote discussion and participation, developing your observation skills and helping you learn to think like an artist.
About This Washington DC Tour
Our walk begins with a discussion of the National Gallery of Art's most significant benefactors, including financier, art collector, and philanthropist Andrew W. Mellon, and their vision for a great museum in the nation's capital, with a collection that rivaled any in the world in size and scope. Privately established in 1937 by a joint resolution of Congress, the NGA opened its doors in 1941 and is now America's second-most visited museum, with more than four million visitors a year.
Continuing inside, you'll see some of the museum's earliest works, dating from pre-Renaissance Italy, then compare 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings to American and British works of the 19th century.
But this tour is about more than names, dates, and masterpieces. It's about understanding. Using the art as our visual textbook, we'll trace the development of major genres of western art like portraiture, still lifes, and landscapes, delving into the influence of major art schools like London's Royal Academy, Philadelphia's Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and New York's National Academy of Design. In a group this size, questions and discussion are encouraged, allowing you to come away with invaluable insights into art appreciation that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
Please meet outside of the Gallery at the top of the steps of the West Building on the side facing the National Mall (looking at the building itself we will meet to the right). The National Gallery of Art is located at Constitution Avenue and 6th St NW.
