      About this Washington, DC tour

The man responsible for much of the design you'll see bathed in beautiful light is Pierre L'Enfant. A French-born Revolutionary War veteran and architect based in New York, he had already worked on some prominent designs for major American cities when his old war buddy George Washington hired him to design the District in 1791.

L'Enfant had seen the modest mock-ups and European suggestions provided by then-Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. He knew what most people expected to see from the design of the new federal district.

And he rejected all of it.

Two centuries later, the capital still closely resembles L'Enfant's original plan. He had called for a grand baroque grid of wide, sloping avenues lined with elegant trees that would create a vast network of open spaces to be owned and developed by each of the fifteen states. And instead of reserving the most scenic, picturesque natural formation for the nation's leader, as was customary in Europe, L'Enfant placed Capitol Hill there, on an elevated hill overlooking what is now the Mall.

It's a physical testament to the spirit of democracy. And when you see these beautiful monuments illuminated by the evening lights, one thought will come to your mind:

L'Enfant knew what he was doing.

      Enfant terrible

The French term for a bratty child could apply to Pierre L'Enfant, the temperamental architect commissioned to design the District of Columbia. After tearing down the home of a city commissioner without permission and refusing to change his plans or even share their details, President Washington had no choice but to fire his old friend. Despite the rocky ending to his commission, most of L'Enfant's designs became reality.
