      About this Washington DC tour

As our nation's capital, Washington, D.C., is home to the White House, the official residence and workplace of every one of our presidents since 1800. An elegant and entertaining way to get a taste of D.C's presidential history is to take the Spirit of Washington lunch cruise.

When you pass by the Lincoln Memorial, note its 36 columns, one for each state reunited following the Civil War. No truth to the rumor, though, that Abraham Lincoln's hands in the sculpture spell out "A" and "L" in sign language. The Jefferson Memorial shares a similar Parthenon-inspired design – one that was approved by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It originally had a plaster cast of the Thomas Jefferson statue, due to wartime restrictions on metal, but was replaced with a more fitting bronze statue after the war.

The Woodrow Wilson Bridge, known not just for the president behind it, but for the traffic going over the bridge each day, and the always-busy Reagan National Airport are other presidential-themed sights you'll see from your cruise. While DC also has Dulles Airport, Reagan National Airport is still the place to go to get to the city quickly.

The National War College, another attraction visible from your boat, has been the training ground for generations of military leaders and presidential advisors like Colin Powell and Wesley Clark. All of these attractions contribute to who we are as Americans. A lunch cruise with a hearty entree of American lore? That's pretty delicious.

      Rolling on the riverine

One of the unusual sights you'll see on the Potomac River is the Jones Point Lighthouse, one of the last riverine lighthouses in the country. This edifice, which dates from the 1850s, doesn't look like a traditional lighthouse. Instead, it is built like a house, with a lighting structure on top. It may look large, but imagine how cramped it was for Benjamin Greenwood, the longer-serving keeper, who lived there with his second wife and 11 of his 14 children.
