      About This Melbourne Tour

Enlighten yourself on boomtown Melbourne, from the immense gold rush, to the arrival of immigrants and the city's never-ending growth. A few hours will be spent strolling around hidden treasures in the "hoddle grid", including Spring Street's Old Treasury Building. Transformed into a museum that exhibits Melbourne's captivating history, the 19th-century structure houses several permanent exhibitions highlighting rapid economic growth.

Admire the sandstone finish on the building's exterior, before a historian leads you to points of interest like the ANZ Banking Museum. Australia's earliest banks are put in the spotlight at this attraction, where you can inspect ancient banking equipment and traditional architecture. City growth picked up momentum in the 1850s, when people flocked to the 'the jewel of the southern hemisphere' after the discovery of gold.

Soon, Melbourne became one of the largest cities of the British Empire, as settlers clustered around the rim of the Yarra River. Overlooking this waterway is the Immigration Museum. Find out about the immigrant communities of Melbourne ahead of discovering more about the city's social, political and economic history at the Parliament House. Your day will not be complete without wandering along the concrete jungle’s culturally important laneways and arcades.

The Gold Rush - An Important Period in Melbourne’s History

When gold was discovered beneath Australian soil in 1852, Melbourne quickly became the to-go place for people who sought out wealth. The city’s rim was soon transformed, as temporary houses built from wood, iron and canvas were erected. Local accommodation became fully booked overnight and the metropolis celebrated a maturing point. Many workers relocated from other parts of Australia to live in “boomtown”, due to the fact the output of gold was one of the world’s greatest. Gold was exported to Great Britain for debt relief purposes and following the gold rush, Chinese presence grew.
