Natura Cultural Discovery Tour by 4X4

      Bora Bora, French Polynesia
From (USD) $82 Per Adult / $41 Per Child
      • The Turtle Stone: "Ofai Honu" symbolizes the birth of the founding ancestor of Bora Bora and is one of the most important cultural relics on the island. The large stone, which actually resembles a turtle, sits on private land.
      • Marae Hau Puni: This large open-air temple consisting of several platforms was a "family" marae and not for public ceremonies. During its restoration, many ancient objects were found on site.
      • World War II canons: During WWII, Bora Bora was used as a supply base by the United States. To defend the islands, large artillery guns, like the ones you'll see on the tour, were placed around the island to protect the lagoon.
      • Mama Ruta's Pareo Workshop: Enjoy fresh fruits and a demonstration of the art of painting pareos (wrap-around skirts). See how the patterns are created and tinted. If you like, you can order one with your choice of colors to be delivered.
      • Hiro's Stone: See the sacred stone of "Hiro the Warrior," god of Bora Bora. Legend has it that Hiro would beat on the large rock to warn his warriors of an enemy attack.
      • Roundtrip transportation: Hotel pick-up and drop-off from most local hotels is included; a small fee may apply at some locations.
      About This Bora Bora Tour

The turtle is one of the most important symbols in Polynesian culture. Turtles represent the navigator, and are connected to many meanings, including wellness, harmony, and fertility. The Turtle Stone that you'll see on this tour is linked to a higher happening: the birth of royalty in Bora Bora.

Legend has it that Ofai Honu, the Turtle Stone, entered into a union with the cliffs of Mount Pahia and produced Firiamata-o-Vavau, the founding ancestor and first royal person of Bora Bora. Vavau was the island's original name.

A great warrior and outstanding navigator, Firiamata established the oldest known lineage on Bora Bora. And his travels helped unify and extend his territory.

Ofai Honu, a rock that literally looks like a giant turtle, is considered the foundation stone of Bora Bora, and is a cultural relic of the greatest importance to the island's people. The stone is also a testament to the truthfulness of its meanings.

The Turtle Stone is said to stand for fertility. If we judge this based on Firiamata, there can be no doubt. He fathered nine sons in Bora Bora, two sons in Raiatea, one son in Rarotonga, two sons in New Zealand, one son in Tonga, and three sons in the Tuomotus.

And who knows how many daughters he had.

      The writing on the skin

Tattoos were incredibly important in Polynesian culture. Since Polynesians have no written language, tattoos were used to express identity and personality. Through tattoos, people could convey their stature in society, their genealogy, and even their sexual maturity. Before the missionaries arrived in the late 18th century, nearly everyone in Polynesia was tattooed.
