      • Spectacular lookouts: Your guide knows where the best views of the island are, and takes you there to share them with you. You'll see different sides of the island, all with breathtaking panoramas.
      • Matira Point: Enjoy access to a private lookout from where you can see the east side of Matira Point and the incredible shades of blue in the color of the water.
      • World War II canons: During WWII, Bora Bora was used as a supply base by the United States. To defend the islands, large artillery guns, like the ones you'll see on the tour, were placed around the island to protect the lagoon.
      • Mama Ruta's pareo workshop: Enjoy fresh fruits and a demonstration of the art of painting pareos (wrap-around skirts). See how the patterns are created and tinted. If you like, you can order one with your choice of colors to be delivered.
      • Roundtrip transportation: Hotel pick-up and drop-off from most local hotels is included; a small fee may apply at some locations.
      About This Bora Bora Tour

In early 1942, the United States needed to establish a supply base in the Pacific, to aid with the war effort against the Japanese. Out of 118 islands in French Polynesia, only Bora Bora offered what the American armed forces needed. To keep the plan a secret, the building of the base was code named "Operation Bobcat."

As many as 6,000 servicemen were stationed on Bora Bora during World War II, a number that severely swelled the island's population. In order to fortify the base, four pairs of artillery canons were strategically placed high in the mountains.

Each canon measured nearly twenty feet in length and fired seven-inch shells.

The war went on but never came to Bora Bora. The eight canons were manned until 1946 when the U.S. forces left. Abandoned, it didn't take long for nature to grow all around them. But the canons are still here, and accessible to those who wish to see history.

On this tour, your guide will take you on a 4x4 vehicle into the mountains to see some of these canons. Only then will you truly appreciate their size. Only then will you be able to imagine their power.

And only then will you be truly thankful that they never had to be fired.

      Lovely target

From the various lookouts high on the mountains of Bora Bora, you can really see the large interior lagoon that can only be entered through a single pass. It's a beautiful sight and a nice design by nature. It's also one of the big reasons why the U.S. chose Bora Bora as a naval base in 1942, and put it under the threat of bombing by the Japanese.
