      • A taste of the island: Visit the Lycee Agricole, Moorea's famed agricultural school and take in the smell of the tropical fruits, then stop at Manutea distillery for a taste of fresh fruit juices.
      • Explore the island: Ride across large banana, vanilla, grapefruit, lemon, and pineapple plantations, and take in the island's lush and colorful vegetation.
      • Roundtrip transportation: Hotel pick-up and drop-off from most hotels is included; a small fee may apply at some hotels.
      About This Moorea Tour

The natives call it Rotui; James Michener named it Bali Hai, but people who visit the summit of this jagged, lush, 2,951-foot peak, unscaleable without motorized help, come away with a single comment: magical.

And so, Magic Mountain gets its name. Not because some ancient god stood on it to call forth the stunning lagoon that surrounds the island. Not because doomed lovers fought to be together and in their tearful embrace created the blues of the surrounding waters.

Not even because some old legend says this pinnacle in the shape of shark tooth bit off a chunk of land and formed Opunohu Bay.

But when you do ascend the mountain, the last leg on foot through a path surrounded by oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, and reach the viewpoint from which you can see the varying blue shades of the lagoon and unspoiled Opunohu Bay, you'll feel what all who've come before you have.

      And it's magical.

      Good maraes make good neighbors

A marae, as you'll see on this tour, is an open-air temple that was used for religious, political, and social activities – including human sacrifice. But it had other purposes. Marae were built across the land to act as property deeds, show inheritance, and mark property boundaries. So a marae could be the site where someone was ceremoniously killed, or a way for two neighbors to avoid killing each other.
