Lagoon Excursion and Shark Encounter, with Lunch
Moorea, French Polynesia
- Swim with the stingrays: Step into shallow water about three feet deep and let the stingrays swim between your legs and all around you. You can gently pet them, and follow them with your mask and snorkel, provided.
- See the sharks: Your guide will lure them close so you can get a fascinating look at these sleek, beautiful creatures. Most will be blacktip sharks, but there may be a lemon shark or two, and who knows what else.
- Authentic Polynesian lunch: Sit back and relax while your crew prepares a Polynesian barbecue lunch consisting of grilled fish and chicken, salads, fresh fruit and the famous poisson cru, the Polynesian raw fish in coconut milk.
- Coco & Raw Fish Show: Take this opportunity to see how Tahitians husk coconuts, and learn how to marinate fish with coconut milk and lime to make poisson cru.
- Roundtrip transportation: Hotel pick-up and drop-off from most local hotels is included; a small fee may apply at some locations.
About This Moorea Tour
Along with the thrill of seeing sharks in open waters and the anticipation of swimming with stingrays, this tour takes you to both Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay. The two bays should really swap names since it was in Opunohu that Captain James Cook actually dropped anchor and came ashore in 1777.
As you cruise into Opunohu Bay, you'll get a sense of what it felt like for Captain Cook. The people of Moorea have fought hard to keep the bay free of construction and development. What you see today is basically what Captain Cook saw 240 years ago.
It was the unspoiled nature of Opunohu Bay that made Hollywood film the story of another famous British captain here. His name was Lieutenant William Bligh, and he was the commander of the HMS Bounty.
The story of the "Mutiny on the Bounty" has been told many times, including in three blockbuster Hollywood films with star-studded casts that include names like Gable, Brando, and Laughton. The 1984 version that was filmed here, The Bounty, stars Mel Gibson as Fletcher Christian and Anthony Hopkins as Captain Bligh.
Out of all the films about the Mutiny on the Bounty, The Bounty is the most historically accurate of all. And thanks to Opunohu Bay, the only film that was shot on location in Tahiti, where the story took place.
Polynesians believe sharks can be an aumakua, a dead ancestor who's been deified into an entity. Many stories tell of aumakuas helping their relatives in need out in the ocean. One story talks of a boat load of tourists that sank. Sharks attacked and killed the tourists, but the Polynesian captain began to chant and his aumakua appeared, offered his dorsal fin, and took him to safety on the shore.
