About This Moorea Tour
During the construction of the InterContinental Resort, an artificial lagoon was created off the islet where the resort sits. The lagoon had Moorea’s crystal clear water, but not much else going for it. Then, something beautiful happened.
In 2004, work to create a coral garden by enriching the marine life and underwater vegetation in the lagoon began. First, large basalt blocks were placed in the lagoon; then, corals were transplanted and attached to the submerged rocks. The health of the coral was monitored to make sure it thrived.
Soon, different species of fish began to settle there, and in time, more began to populate the reefs. Today, about 80 species of fish, invertebrates, and algae, live in the corals, rocks, and sandy bottom of the Coral Garden. But the story doesn't end there.
The Reef Quest Underwater Trail was created to give any visitor with a mask the ability to explore the beautiful coral reefs. The trail begins with two posters at the entrance to the lagoon; one for fish, the other for corals. It's designed to guide and educate the visitor, while protecting the fragile marine environment.
The Reef Quest Underwater Trail was the first of its kind. Now there's also one in Tahiti, and another in Bora Bora.
Whale season in Polynesia is about five months long. It starts around the end of June or the beginning of July, and lasts until late October, when the newborn calves are strong enough to make the migratory journey to Antarctica. In Tahiti, no one watches the calendar waiting for whale season. Here, a tree named "atae," also known as the whale tree, blossoms to signal the arrival of the whales.
