      • Equipment check: Everything you need for your snorkeling adventure is included in the package, such as the mask, snorkel, and fins, plus a professional guide.
      • Roundtrip transportation: Hotel pick-up and drop-off from most local hotels is included; a small fee may apply at some locations.
      About This Rangiroa Tour

They call it "Shooting the Pass." A boat takes you out to the ocean side of the Rangiroa atoll where you get in the water. Then, you relax and let the current carry you back in through the Tiputa Pass, while you admire the underwater world below.

Depending on the time of year, you're likely to see manta and leopard rays, barracudas, turtles, Napoleon fish, large titan trigger fish, humphead wrasse, and more. Depending on the time of day, you may see the extraordinary show that bottlenose dolphins put on playing in the waves formed by the currents.

There's always a shark or two in the pass. Most likely blacktip or lemon sharks. But occasionally, hammerheads, silvertips, and even tiger sharks have been seen in the waters, though usually at a greater depth in the pass than you'll be snorkeling over. Not to mention that the pass is nearly 800 feet wide, and you'll be toward the shallower edges.

Closer to you there'll be one school of fish after another displaying seemingly endless combinations of colors, hues, and shades. And of course, a vibrant coral reef that you'll discover while you effortlessly drift into the lagoon – shooting the pass.

      Stationary sharks

During high tide in Tiputa Pass, the rushing water creates a strong incoming current. So strong, in fact, that it makes it possible for large fish to float there motionless as if they were frozen in time. As many as 200 sharks have been seen floating at Tiputa Pass, at a depth of about 165 feet. But they're not there posing for pictures; they're waiting for prey.
