      • Climb an icon: Experience the one and only bridge climb in NZ, scaling an eight-lane landmark built in 1959 – the last lattice girder bridge built anywhere. The gentle grade of the walkways makes this a doable challenge for anyone 7 and above.
      • Professional guide: After suit-up and briefing, you'll be led over the bridge by an expert guide who shares stories about Auckland landmarks, along with the bridge's colorful secrets and unique architectural features.
      • Mind-boggling views: Crossing high above Waitemata Harbor, the bridge's superstructure offers a paramount vantage point on downtown Auckland and its surrounding marinas, basins, and volcano cone landscape.
      • Bungy central: The 800-foot main span is a mecca for thrill-seeking bungy jumpers; you'll stop by their spiffy "launch pod" to catch some of the action. You may be tempted to give it a try yourself!
      • Photo record: Group and individual photos will be taken at the bridge summit by your guide, and made available for purchase when you return to the base.

      Special comments

Children 14 and under need to be accompanied by an adult

Before the Harbor Bridge went up, the trip from downtown Auckland to the North Shore of Waitemata Harbor required a 30-mile roundabout drive or a ferry ride. Today, that same harbor crossing takes just a few minutes by car or bus – and provides commuters with some pretty awesome views.

But for the true showstopper vistas, you need to get off the roadway and onto the walkway – on an Auckland Bridge Climb. With guided access to an exclusive series of catwalks and stairways, you'll soon find that the higher you go on this massive steel arch, the more incredible the scenery gets.

The panorama at the summit is incomparable – like being on the roof of a 20-story building, except without the building under your feet. Just a narrow ribbon of steel tracing the apex of the bridge, with little between you, the sky, and the water far below. The entire skyline of central Auckland stretches out in the distance, with the Sky Tower as its exclamation point.

Even with railings to hold on to, the sensation is a serious thrill; one that unfolds slowly and lasts a long time. In that sense, it's totally different from the seconds-long, high-adrenaline rush those bungy-jumpers experience as they leap from the launch pod below.

But keep in mind, life is all about embracing the differences: The climb and jump don't have to be either-or challenges. With just a little planning, you can you can experience the bridge high and low, fast and slow.

      Clip-ons untie traffic

Back in 1959, the Harbor Bridge's designers did something urban engineers often do: They woefully underestimated the city's growth rate and the daily traffic load. Within a decade, the bridge's four lanes were hopelessly clogged. The ungainly solution: doubling capacity by adding a pair of prefabricated two-lane "clip-ons" on each side of the roadway. It worked, sort of. Problem is, clip-ons have a life expectancy. And these two are approaching the end of theirs.
