Highlights of Historical and Modern Auckland
Tour Participation Requirements
Set on the isthmus between two harbors, Auckland was a mere shantytown when European's settled here in the 1800s. Today, it's anything but. This former capital is one of New Zealand's most intriguing cities, modern yet deeply rooted in history. Native Maori traditions are strong there, and nowhere is this more visible than at the Auckland Museum, home to over a thousand artifacts and a traditional Maori "haka" show.
Hakas tell stories through dance. One depicts the legend of a tribal chief seeking revenge against a man who had killed a whale. The chief sent women from the tribe to find the man, knowing only that he sported distinctly overlapping teeth. The women performed their captivating haka and their wily ways paid off when the man smiled and was captured – then promptly done away with.
The haka also has a presence at sporting events where Kiwi teams bring history to the athletic battlefield. They dance and chant: "…It is the taste of victory that draws us here and we honour the legacy of champions who precede us. …We feel the closeness of our ancestors as we alight the battlefield… Fight to the end in order that the legacy will endure into the future. Here we are! Seize it!"
In addition to the museum, this tour will visit a number of other locations that provide a glimpse into modern and historical Auckland. You are here! Seize it!
Beware the three witches of Auckland Domain
Be on the lookout for ghosts when you stroll the grounds at Auckland Domain. Urban legend says that, in the 1800s, three accused witches were hanged from trees in a swamp that is now part of the Auckland Domain. Visitors have reported seeing ghost-like figures among the branches and hearing the sounds of human-like howls and growling.
