Unearth the wonders of Auckland, a sprawling, multicultural city atop a volcanic field on New Zealand's North Island. Intersected by lava flows that form thoroughfares, this distinct Polynesian locale features explosion craters (maars), scoria cones, and tuff rings.

No trip to the city is complete without a stroll along Queen Street. Named for Queen Victoria, the street – now lined with boutiques, restaurants, and pubs – was an early development of the new town of Auckland when it was founded in 1840 (coincidentally the same year Victoria married her first cousin, Albert).

See why Auckland is called the City of Sails as you take in the panoramic views of yacht-dotted Viaduct Harbour. Wander through Auckland Domain and Wintergardens, with its temperate and tropical glasshouses, sunken pond, and compelling War Memorial Museum. Enjoy a tea break in Parnell Village where historic buildings have been transformed into trendy boutiques.

Skirt beach-fringed Tamaki Drive to Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park, perched high above Mission Bay. After seeing the water from on high, dip down low and check out the colony of Antarctic penguins and other underwater wonders that live at Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium, brainchild of the namesake marine archeologist and diver.

Dense forests, coastal beauty, laidback Kiwi charm, and an indigenous soundtrack ranging from natural bird songs to high-energy rock music make this diverse spot with Maori roots nothing short of charming. As they say in Auckland, come as a visitor, live like a local, leave as a friend.

       Nature with limitations…

Despite being known as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts, New Zealand does not have any natural, four-legged mammals to call its own. The Maori brought its only indigenous land mammal – the bat – hundreds of years ago. What's more, there are no naturally occurring snakes, poisonous spiders, or jellyfish to be found.
