Admission to Orana Wildlife Park
Christchurch, New Zealand
- Great apes: Marvel at a 500-pound Western Lowland silverback and his two brothers – the only gorillas in New Zealand, living it up in a $6-million-dollar enclosure that opened in 2015.
- Eye-to-eye meet-ups: See a herd of enormous white rhinos from just a few feet away as they graze on hay and have their bellies rubbed by informative keepers. Watch gentle giraffes' nimble tongues at work, stripping leaves from the branches you hand feed them. Check out New Zealand's largest Tasmanian Devil habitat, and more.
- Winged encounters: Spend time in two walk-through aviaries, alive with rare natives like the tui, bellbird, wood pigeon, blue duck, and red-crowned and yellow-crowned parakeets. There's also the notoriously inquisitive kea, an alpine parrot known for rifling through backpacks, purses, and even cars. Hang onto your stuff!
- Optional wild experiences: The Park's exciting extreme-close-view activities include accompanying keepers as they travel in a special vehicle to feed a pride of free-range lions, or a far mellower session feeding lemurs their afternoon tea and bananas by hand. Schedules vary; limited daily tickets and conditions apply.
About This Christchurch Tour
If there was a Louvre of wild animals, this place could be it. That's how much there is to see here.
At nearly 200 acres, Orana is New Zealand's largest wildlife sanctuary and conservation project. Endangered animals from around the planet thrive here, roaming freely in a park designed around natural boundaries and habitats rather than zoo-like fences and cages.
Based on what visitors have to say, the design works beautifully. Online comments are laced with superlatives about the care and condition of the animals that live there, the high degree of human-animal interaction, and the knowledge and friendliness of the staff who care for residents and guests alike.
If you really want to go wild, options like the Lion Encounter fill the bill very nicely. You'll travel right into the pride's habitat, standing inside a sturdy cage-like vehicle as the keeper foists a meaty lunch into the mouths and clawed paws of these big cats. They love to climb onto the vehicle's steel mesh roof – i.e., right over your head – providing an adrenaline-pumping view from under a lion's paws. This, in the wild, is not the view any living creature wants to have.
Hell of a smell
Others may be bigger or toothier, but few creatures at Orana can match the Tasmanian Devils for sheer ferocity. The bite of these carnivorous marsupials is the strongest per pound of body mass of any mammal – and they have an appetite to match. The size of a small dog, they consume up to 40 percent of their body weight in a single feeding, devouring the flesh, bone, and fur of carrion. They hail from Tasmania, an island under Australia; the rest of their name may derive from the screeches they make while eating. And their ungodly stench.
Please make your way to 793 Mcleans Island Rd, Mcleans Island, Christchurch to begin your adventure.
Bring small coins for the bathroom. Take a light jacket or rain coat for the weather. Orana Wildlife Park is New Zealand's only open-range zoo, located on the outskirts of Christchurch. The Park is roughly 57 miles from the port area of Akaroa.
Traveler must be able to walk roughly 500 yards over even, paved sidewalks and wooden floors during the course of the tour.
