      About This Picton Tour

By 1918, the infamous German fighter pilot known as the Red Baron had already secured his place in history. At only 25, he'd been credited with downing 80 enemy aircraft. Perhaps he'd come to believe in his own immortality when he daringly flew behind enemy lines in pursuit of his target in April of that year. But Allied troops were ready and an Australian gunner promptly shot him down, with the Baron's red Fokker triplane crashing dramatically in a field.

Imagine what it was like in the field that day when Australian soldiers picked through the wreckage in search of information and memorabilia. If you have trouble picturing it, a visit to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre in Blenheim will clear things up. The scene is one of many depicted in life-size dioramas designed and built by historians and set designers under the watchful eye of aviation enthusiast Peter Jackson.

Jackson, the Oscar-winning director of the Lord of the Rings films is a native New Zealander and an avid collector of vintage WWI aircraft. He spearheaded this acclaimed museum, which is ranked among the top in the South Pacific. With more than 20 realistic exhibits and dioramas, it provides fascinating insight into the lives of fighter pilots in the early 20th century.

More adventurous visitors are encouraged to don WWI pilot goggles and ride along in a vintage aircraft over the spectacular Marlborough wine region. You can even bring along a red scarf.

The Red Baron's notorious blood relative

Although Manfred von Richthofen – the Red Baron – never had children, one of his brother's reported offspring stole the headlines in recent years. Suzane von Richtofen, was convicted of bludgeoning her parents to death in Brazil and is currently serving a 40-year sentence for murder. Although the German von Richtofen family denies any link, it gives new meaning to the words "blood relative."
