About This Tauranga Tour
For over 700 years, the Maori have used the unique thermal mud and acidic sulfurous waters of Hells Gate to soothe, heal, and improve their overall wellbeing. A mere 20 minutes in one of the warm, silky, mud pools, followed by soaking in the mineral-rich sulfur waters of the spa, will make you feel like you found the fountain of youth.
Mud has been known to have therapeutic powers for thousands of years. Cleopatra and the Queen of Sheba loved them, because they're relaxing and re-invigorating. Soaking in the warm mud of Hells Gate can help ease muscle pains and aches, and minerals like sodium, magnesium, and potassium in the mud can do wonders for your skin. But that's only part of the experience.
After the mud bath and a cool shower to cleanse it off, you'll enjoy the healthful waters of the Hurutini pool at the spa complex. The sulfur water helps restore body tissue, strengthen nails and hair, even alleviate certain skin eczemas, taking advantage of your open pores to exfoliate and deep-cleanse: a heavenly feeling in a place called Hells Gate.
The dead pool
The warm sulfuric water in the Hells Gate spa comes from a pool named after Hurutini, wife of a cruel Maori chief who showed her no respect. According to legend, she threw herself into the hot boiling pool to wash away her shame, and died. When her mother found the body, she cried "here lies my precious one," (aue teri nei tiki) which was shortened to Tikitere. And that became the Maori name for the thermal park and surrounding area, 650 years ago.
Please make your way to State Highway 30, Rotorua to begin your adventure.
The most important requirement is for the child to drink water while bathing to keep hydrated. This is the same requirement for adults. The other issue to be aware of is the need to ensure that the child is comfortable with the heat. Again this is the same requirement for adults.
The amount of walking is at the traveler's discretion while visiting the attraction. Varying surfaces will be encountered during your tour.
