About This Tauranga Tour
The story of the kiwi is the story of New Zealand, and conservation of the national bird protects an integral part of the national identity – so much so that the name of the bird is now synonymous with "New Zealander."
This behind-the-scenes look at a working kiwi hatchery offers fascinating insights into a complex process involving many people, beginning with eggs collected from around New Zealand, through incubation and hatching. You'll also see what it takes to raise the chicks and get them ready to venture into the wild on their own – something Rainbow Springs has been doing since 1975.
Two of the five kiwi species are endangered, one critically; the other three are vulnerable. Being small, flightless birds, kiwis are threatened by dogs, cats, ferrets, and other animals that didn't exist in New Zealand until European settlement began, two centuries ago. The kiwi's powerful legs can propel it to speeds of 20 miles per hour, but that's not always enough to escape predators.
Of course, the biggest blow to the kiwi populations came from the encroachment of rapidly swelling cities, as deforestation reduced their nesting area and food supply.
The work being done at Rainbow Springs is critical to the future of kiwi species. Before the egg collecting began, about five percent of chicks hatched in the wild survived. Those hatched through dedicated breeding programs have a 65 percent chance. To date, Rainbow Springs has hatched and returned to the wild more than 1,500 kiwis, helping to ensure that these beloved creatures remain a living part of the national identity.
The bird show at Rainbow Springs isn't just about seeing exotic birds flying around. It's a delightful display of their amazing learning ability. The show demonstrates the birds' skills at tricks, games, and just plain clowning around. But even as you're laughing, you'll realize that their antics are evidence of remarkable intelligence.
