About This Tauranga Tour
It's the fastest, wildest, most heart-pumping way to soak in a bit of Maori heritage and see the sights around legendary Lake Rotorua. In between flying over the water and making daredevil spins, you'll come up to famous landmarks and hear the tales behind them. It's like you're using a jet-age boat to travel back hundreds of years – at 50 miles an hour.
In the middle of the lake is Mokoia Island, home of a young warrior by the name of Tutanekai. At a conclave of tribes he locked eyes with princess Hinemoa; it was love at first sight. But Hinemoa was a princess, and Tutanekai only a common warrior. Their love was forbidden. How does the story end? We'll let your guide tell you the rest.
At Kawaha Point lie the remnants of the village where Chief Tonohopu lived. One night, when many of his warriors were away, a rival tribe attacked and set fire to the village. Tonohopu, knowing he didn't have enough warriors to fight back, opted to save his five children and fled. But in the confusion, his youngest boy was left behind and captured.
Tonohopu knew a direct attack on that tribe would bring certain death to his kidnapped son. Yet he managed to save him. Book the tour and find out how.
End of their rope
The geothermal qualities of Sulfur Bay inspired a variety of commercial ventures, culminating in the renowned Polynesian Spa. First came Cameron's Laughing Gas Pool and the Coffee Pot thermal mud pool. Bathers would be lowered in tied to ropes, which had the added benefit of keeping them from sinking completely into the oozing mud.
