Jeep Adventure to Curral Beach and Three Tombos Waterfalls
- Jeep tour: Hop in your open 4x4 Jeep and let your guide tell you about the natural wonders of the island. With few paved roads, this is the best way to explore.
- Curral Beach: Relax on one of Sao Paolo's most famous and beautiful beaches, a golden stretch of sand with bars and cafes where locals come to swim, sun, and play.
- Three Tombos: One waterfall is pretty. Two are beautiful. But three are spectacular. Let the gushing water cascade over you or swim in the lagoons at the base.
About this Ilhabela tour
Its name says it all: Ilhabela translates to "beautiful island," and that's truth in advertising. After all, nearly 85 percent of the island is a state park and UNESCO-protected biosphere, and it's home to 41 beaches and enough waterfalls to visit a different one every day of the year.
Cachoeira dos Tres Tombos, the Three Tombos, is the island's triple crown: a series of cascades that drop up to 65 feet from the top of a cliff. Swim in the pool beneath one of the tombos, perhaps under the bemused gaze of capuchin monkeys, a toucan or two, or any of the other myriad species that call Ilhabela home.
You'll be right on the ocean at Praia do Curral and Curral Beach, one of the most popular beaches on the island. The first thing you'll likely notice is the view: rolling mountains carpeted in lush rainforest behind you and the Sao Sebastio mainland to the northwest. You can admire the scenery from the soft sand, in the irresistible crystal-clear water, or from a table under a palm tree at a beachside cafe.
But perhaps the true beauty of the beautiful island is knowing that the stunning beaches, mountain forests, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife of this unspoiled tropical paradise are being protected and preserved for future generations.
Don't bug out
Before the Portuguese colonized Ilhabela in the early 1500s, it was inhabited by the Tupinamba, who called the island Ciribai, or "tranquil place." Perhaps to maintain the tranquility, the Tupinamba ate their enemies, whether from rival tribes or Portuguese invaders. The Tupinamba are gone, but during the summer you can still be eaten alive by the black mosquito-like creatures known as borrachudos. A thorough coating of insect repellent is required, including the soles of your feet.
