      About this Manaus tour

A visit to the biggest city on the biggest river in the world's biggest rainforest calls for big adventure, and this tour fits the bill.

Your adventure begins with a speedboat ride on the mysterious Rio Negro to the Tupe community of Desana people, known for their friendliness and willingness to interact with outsiders. Observing their welcome ritual and elaborate headdresses and jewelry, it's hard to believe that you're barely 20 miles from a bustling city of more than a million people. But the encroachments of the modern world don't bode well for the rainforest's indigenous tribes; there may only be 2,000 Desana left, so you may be among the last to get a glimpse of their way of life.

This tour includes another rare opportunity, as your boat arrives at the very spot where the Rio Negro and Rio Solimoes meet and become the mightiest river in the world. The volume of water the Amazon sends from this point to where it discharges into the Atlantic is greater than the flow of the next seven largest rivers combined. And the beginning of that incredible journey is clearly marked: Thanks to a combination of the converging rivers' different flow rates, temperature, and water density, the Amazon stays half black and half brown for four miles. It's called the Encontro das Aguas: the Meeting of the Waters.

It's a sight few will ever experience: the birthplace of the Amazon. In a day-long adventure filled with extraordinary moments, this is one of the biggest.

      Whipped into manhood

The Desana Indians have many rituals, including the dance you'll see on this tour. One you won't see is the ceremony that marks the transition from boy to man. The boys lay in the fetal position on the floor as their elders whip them, a way to awaken their sexual potency and strength. Afterward, they're bathed in the river and taught how to make baskets, which they give to a prospective mate when they're deemed ready for fatherhood.
