About this Rio de Janeiro tour

Rio de Janeiro is a cidade maravilhosa (marvelous city), known for its endless beaches, parties, and populated by women in practically nonexistent bikinis. But there's more to Rio than its sultry samba rhythms. There's history and striking architecture to be found here, something you can discover while exploring the city from street level.

But to appreciate all of Rio, perhaps the best way is aboard a cable car suspended nearly 1,300 feet overhead. Sugar Loaf Mountain – Pao de Acucar to the locals – offers an amazing vantage point. The two cable cars it takes to get there offer half the fun … particularly for fans of 007 himself, James Bond, who nearly got thrown from one by the dentally challenged Jaws in the film Moonraker.

The first car takes you 722 feet up to Morro da Urca, where you'll find shops, snack bars, a restaurant, and views of Guanabara Bay and the coastline. Climb into the second cable car to reach the zenith at Pao de Acucar, and prepare to have your breath taken away. The views over Rio are unlike any you've ever seen, where a sprawling metropolis seems to spill down from the mountains and into the sea.

Looking at you below, from his perch atop Mount Corcovado, is the 124-foot tall Christ the Redeemer statue. And no, he's not judging you for the caipirinha in your hand (purchased from the nearby drink stand). He's probably admiring the view, too.

A sweet idea for Sugar Loaf Mountain

During the peak of Brazil's sugar cane trade in the 16th century, blocks of sugar were placed in clay conical molds for shipping, the same shape as the mountain that came to be named Sugar Loaf. But it wasn't until 1907 that a Brazilian engineer had the idea to transport people up the mountain via cable cars. The first tram opened in 1912, and it was made of coated wood. It wasn't until 1972 that steel cars made their way up the mountain.
