About this Rio de Janeiro tour

One of the world's largest urban forests is found right smack in the middle of Rio, and it's a wonder to behold. Tijuca Forest, also known as Tijuca National Park, offers 15 square miles of some of the lushest, most dense rainforest in the world. It's home to hundreds of species of plants and wildlife, many still threatened by extinction.

It's also where you'll find Sugar Loaf and Corcovado mountains, along with the Rock of the Topsail (Pedra da Gavea in Portuguese). Rock of the Topsail is a granite mountain that, at 2,624 feet, is one of the world's tallest mountains to end in the sea. There are also 30 waterfalls, a mural-painted chapel, a pagoda-style gazebo outlook, and a giant granite picnic area known as the Emperor's Table.

Explore this natural wonder on a tour that takes you via jeep, and on foot, along the trails of Tijuca. Your guide will tell you all about the monkeys, ocelots, birds, and butterflies you might see. And if you get lucky, you may even spot a sloth or two.

This trip takes you off the beaten path, just a hop, skip, and a jump from the vibrant center of Rio de Janeiro. As you wind your way on four wheels and two legs through the dense foliage, you might find it hard to believe that you're actually in the middle of a sprawling city.

       Coffee, sugar, and fresh water

Emperor Dom Pedro II liked coffee and sugar as much as any imperial ruler, but when he saw how growing those crops eroded the land around Rio and diminished its water supply; he ordered that Tijuca Forest be replanted. It took slaves and paid laborers 10 years to do so, but the forward-thinking emperor lived to see the land and the water supply saved.
