      About this Punta Arenas Tour

While much of Patagonian land is not amenable to farming, it is ideal for raising grazing sheep, as British pioneers discovered. In 1876, Chilean governor Diego Duble Almeida imported 300 sheep from the Falkland Islands and sold them to British entrepreneur Henry (Enrique) Reynard to be raised in the land by the Strait of Magellan. Other immigrants, mostly of British origin, followed Reynard's lead, eventually raising millions of sheep in the region for wool and meat. As the population of sheep grew here, so did the population of people, mostly from Europe.

There were also consequences to the sheep growing. The indigenous people who lived in the region were forced off the land, and some were even murdered. And there was a real environmental impact to the region. To put it bluntly, sheep poop altered the ecosystem here via eutrophication plus the mere presence of sheep caused erosion. Despite these negatives, sheep growing has had an overall positive impact on Chile's economy.

If you visit Patagonia, touring an estancia (a large ranch with sheep) is a must-do. Fitz Roy Farm, on Isla Riesco, is a working sheep farm, open to the public so you can see the business in action. And getting here is half the fun. You'll go from a guided motorcoach to a short ferry ride to the island. When you arrive, you'll watch sheepdogs round up their quarry, see sheep shearers remove that precious wool and wash it to prepare it for spinning, even try your hand at milking a cow. Check out the museum, showing much of the original equipment used. Cap your day off with a traditional lamb barbecue made with tasty family recipes. Yum.

      Not a pat story
Patagonia is the name of the Chilean (and Argentinian) region of South America where Fitz Roy Farm is located. It's also the name of a popular clothing line. So where did the name "Patagonia" come from? From Ferdinand Magellan, the explorer who discovered the strait connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans that bears his name. He is said to have spotted local Tehuelche Indians by their big footprints on the beach and called them Patagones, from the Portuguese phrase "pata grau," which means "big feet."
