      About this Valparaiso tour

Santiago de Chile has seen its share of calamity over the centuries. But no battle, no earthquake, no violent coup d'etat has derailed the forward march of this city and the strong will of santiaguinos can be traced back to its beginnings.

In 1541, Santiago founder Pedro de Valdivia ventured south with his troops, leaving the young city, which comprised the area around the Plaza de Armas, unprotected. Somewhere between 8,000 and 20,000 Mapuche natives saw the opportunity to attack, and set most of the city on fire.

Inez de Suarez, who was actually Valdivia's mistress, rallied the small number of troops that Valdivia had left behind to protect the town, and inspired them to continue fighting. But the situation was dire. As the story goes, she devised a desperate andndash; and extreme andndash; plan: Decapitate the seven Mapuche chieftains they were holding hostage, put their heads on spikes, and even throw a couple of the heads at the attacking forces.

The Mapuche were so shocked and horrified that they retreated in terror.

The debate over whether Inez did the actual decapitating herself has never been settled. What's not in doubt is that, without her, the city would have fallen. The will to persevere whatever the odds is central to the Chilean character, most recently demonstrated after the mine collapse of 2010, when "The 33" survived underground for 69 days.

Some things are best left alone

La Moneda Palace was still the presidential residence in 1973, when the military coup andnbsp;that brought Augusto Pinochet to power took place. Then-president Allende had vowed not to leave (eventually committing suicide), so the air force bombed the palace. Repairs restored La Moneda to its original glory, but some bullet holes and other damage were preserved and are visible today.
