About this Punta del Este tour
One of Punta de Este's most famous sights is a landmark artwork that marks the dividing point between the town's "calm beach" and the powerful surf of its "angry beach." Titled Los Dedos (The Fingers), the sculpture looks like the buried palm of a gigantic hand reaching up out of the sand. It's downright surreal.
But it fits right in in this well-heeled resort andndash; South America's answer to The Hamptons where artistic expression, style, and natural beauty are all part of the landscape. And this tour.
Like in the posh neighborhoods of Cantegril, San Rafael, and Parque Golf andndash; where the mansions are gated and the gardens, manicured. In club-happy La Barra, where even the bridges look drunk. And in Beverly Hills as glam a burb in Uruguay as it is in California andndash; where you'll spend awhile communing with the surrealists at the Ralli Museum. One of five Ralli's around the world, this private institution's collection of Latin American painting and sculpture is among the most extensive and vibrant in the world.
Even at Punta's marina, local color makes a splash. Adjacent to bobbing luxury yachts, fisherman still clean and sell their catch dockside, while attentive sea lions and gulls battle for the leftovers.
But Punta's most surreal sight of all has to be artist Carlos Paez Vilaro's epic Casapueblo cliffside home and studio. A work of true architectural genius or sheer insanity, it took Vilaro more than 30 years to build this dazzlingly white plan-less complex, using his own hands and traditional tools. You'll tour the extraordinary result, which cascades down the bluff framed by blue sea and sky. Narrow steps lead to a maze of rooms scattered on multiple levels, many filled with the artist's work.
Be careful not to get lost in his imagination during your visit.
Art without the suffering
Casapueblo builder Carlos Paez Vilaro lived a cool artist's life. By the age of 33, his work hung at the Modern Art Museum in Paris. He was pals with Picasso, and stayed at his place in France. In Tahiti, he painted murals for Marlon Brando. He knew Nasser, Castro, and Kennedy, and hung with beauties like Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot. He played conga and bongos and lived at Casapueblo to age 90, having converted part of it to a tasteful hotel where the rooms don't have numbers, but symbols he drew himself.
