About this Washington, DC tour
There are few better places to commemorate the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform than the nation's capital, from the lifelike steel statues at the Korean War Veterans Memorial to the new World War II Memorial and the iconic black granite of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
But the ultimate tribute is Arlington National Cemetery. Around 400,000 people are buried here, including notable figures like John F. Kennedy, William Jennings Bryan, and George Westinghouse. Veterans of the wars in Afghanistan in Iraq are buried in Section 60, a timely reminder that freedom is not free.
Every year, over four million people visit the cemetery. Some are relatives of fallen soldiers, while others are veterans coming to pay respect to their old comrades. Truth be told, it doesn't really matter who you are: Upon taking in the seemingly endless rows of somber gravestones, or the Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, you can't help but feel awestruck at the sacrifice these brave men and women made for their country.
The ultimate guard post
The right to guard the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington is considered one of the highest honors a soldier can earn. But it doesn't come easy: Volunteers have to be the proper build and height and are required to memorize and recite seven pages of information about the history of the cemetery for even a chance of consideration. Since 1937, the Tomb has been continuously guarded every minute of every day, through extreme heat, rain and snow.
