Charleston’s diverse history spans two major wars, pirate battles, catastrophic fires, and hurricanes, plus periods of great wealth and even greater poverty. Oh, and the largest earthquake ever to rock the East Coast. Hear true stories and fascinating facts about the city’s sites as you stroll down worn cobblestone roads and scenic back alleys past buildings that have stood for centuries.
While on your leisurely trek, you'll have the opportunity to explore historically significant architecture, peaceful green spaces, unique local attractions, and all the town's fascinating nooks and crannies. Seven stops include the Civil War-era Battery, the Four Corners of Law, and the Old Exchange Building, which has served as a commerce center, a barracks, and even a dungeon for pirates and deserters.
Your knowledgeable tour guide will pack a plethora of information into your tour. Two hours have never gone by so fast! GoBe guides are chosen not just for their quick wit and way with a story, but for their vast educational backgrounds in architecture, colonial, and antebellum history. So go ahead and ask all your questions. It’s just about impossible to stump them.
The ghost in the purple dress
Your tour begins and ends at The Mills House Wyndham Grand Hotel. Located in the heart of Charleston’s historic downtown, The Mills House is equally known for its gracious southern hospitality and its haunted past. Believers claim the hotel is home to a resident 19th-century ghost with a penchant for purple. Story has it she is often spotted between the hours of 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. in the rear lobby.
