This adventure will take you where others fear to tread. Follow your GoBe guide inside the graveyard of Circular Congregational Church, likely the oldest English burial ground still in existence in Charleston. Drink in a night of history and intrigue as you step across elaborate graves and read elegant headstone inscriptions. Listen to tales of the great loves and losses that have led to Charleston's legendary spiritual activity.
Get to know the particular ghosts that haunt this space, including rebel warrior John C. Calhoun, who has been dancing in the streets with his wife for more than 150 years. Then imagine the gripping fear of waking up six feet under, as your guide recounts gruesome tales of Charleston's questionable medical practices, and patients mistakenly buried alive.
Enjoy this up-close look into the resting places of Charleston's most illustrious and interesting personalities. Before you leave the tree-shrouded gravesites behind, you'll get some interesting and eyebrow-raising cemetery lore, as your guide explains the rumored origins of well-known sayings like "saved by the bell" and "graveyard shift." For a chance to capture proof of spirit activity, be sure to bring a flash camera. You never know what you'll encounter in the dark.
What lies beneath
According to Frank Karpiel, an educator, historian, and author of the book Charleston's Historic Cemeteries, more than 100,000 human remains are still buried under the houses and businesses of Charleston. All public burial grounds from the 17th to the 19th century were built over, most without removing the remains. Sound like the plot from a horror movie? In Charleston, it's the dead truth.
